FROM MY WORLD
A Tale of Two Igors
Near the end of my last year in school, the talk in class changed from who liked whom to what everyone was doing after graduation. My friends became really focused on figuring out their next steps.
My best friend, Igor Genin (yes, another Igor), wanted to keep studying electronics. Almost all of my friends felt the same way, which didn't surprise me at all.
They were groomed for a “normal” life.
Study hard, get a good steady job, get promoted to senior manager, buy a car, have a kid, work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for the next 40 years, and retire when you’re 67.
That’s normal. And I hated it.
I wanted to start my own business instead. The idea of spending the rest of my life dreading my job and slowly dying inside was unbearable. I wanted to do something I loved and get paid a lot for it. I wanted to work hard, all the time, and feel great about it.
Since I was really good with computers and the internet, I decided to figure out how to make money with my laptop.
My father, having tested the waters of business in Ukraine, was particularly skeptical. His experiences in the 90s were fraught with danger and corruption. Ultimately, he lost it all, leaving us to seek refuge in Israel with a mere $1,000 and what few belongings fit in 11 bags. That kind of loss scarred him, and he was afraid to see me go down a similar road. We had a lot of disagreements over this, but I did what I was set out to do.
Lucky for me, I made it.
Unfortunately for Igor, he made it too.
Except, it wasn't really quite like he thought it would be. He is stuck in middle management at some forgettable tech company.
Igor's living the ordinary life he always wanted, yet he’s miserable.
Last time we talked was about five years ago. He was still in the same job, living that same life. On top of it, he was going to school after work, in the hopes of getting a promotion if he manages to get another degree.
I wanted to explain to him that the solution is not "yet another degree" but I knew it was a lost cause, so I just wished him well.
As I hung up the phone that day, I couldn't shake the feeling of sadness for my friend. Two paths diverged from the same place, leading us to drastically different lives.
It made me wonder— why do so many of us settle for the safety of a "normal" life, even if it means sacrificing our dreams?
Is it fear of failure? The comfort of familiarity? Or perhaps it's the influence of those around us, shaping our decisions without us even realizing it?
Whatever the answer to that question is, one thing is a fact: life is too short to live for someone else’s idea of success.
If there’s something you truly want to do, go after it with everything you’ve got. Because in the end, the biggest regret isn’t failing; it’s never trying at all.
So, I challenge you to reflect on your own path. Are you pursuing your true passion, or are you settling for a life that’s merely “good enough”? The choice is yours, and it’s never too late to change course.
LESSONS FROM LEGENDS
The Consumer Is Your Wife
In 1955, in a grand conference room filled with skeptical advertising executives, David Ogilvy stepped up to the podium.
With his calm and commanding presence, he looked straight into the sea of eyes and declared, "The consumer isn't a moron; she's your wife."
That rocked the advertising world.
You see, Ogilvy wasn't just being clever; he was demanding a revolution in how we think about advertising. He called out the entire industry for treating consumers like idiots and challenging everyone to rethink everything.
He introduced the notion that advertising should be intelligent - that ads should be clear, informative, and respectful.
This was revolutionary when most ads were loud and obnoxious, filled with empty promises.
His approach led to some of the most successful campaigns ever at the time.
Fast forward to today, a bunch of morons still use the same flashy gimmicks that were used 70 years ago. They think they're smarter than their audiences, but they're only just shooting themselves in the foot.
Smart advertising builds trust and creates a lasting relationship. Respecting your audience creates a connection. When consumers feel respected, they pay attention.
David Ogilvy's lesson is timeless: treat your audience with respect and clarity.
So, next time you're creating a message for your audience, keep David in mind and ask yourself: are you talking down to your audience? What would change if you treated them as smart and capable?

MINDSET MAKEOVER
Write It Wrong the First Time
As you're reading this, there's probably a project you've been putting off.
Why haven’t you started yet? You tell yourself it’s because you haven’t found the time.
Yet, you found the time to read this article.
Maybe you think starting your project is different. Reading an email only takes a few minutes, while your project will take hours, days, or even weeks to complete, if not months.
And you’re right.
But that’s not the question.
The question is simply: how long would it take to START your project? Just to begin? The answer is only a few minutes. Maybe even less time than it takes to finish this article.
Starting is the hardest part. We often build up the task in our minds, thinking we need the perfect moment, conditions, or plan. But in reality, all you need to do is start.
Here’s a rule I follow: never stare at a blank page for more than five minutes. If I find myself stuck, I jot down the first thing that comes to mind—no matter how "bad" or "good" it is. This breaks the ice and gets the words flowing. It creates momentum.
This messy beginning is what writers call a "rough draft." It’s like giving your ideas a playground. Write down anything that comes to mind, no matter how silly it seems. The important thing is to get something on that page.
Why is this helpful? Once you have a rough draft, you have something to work with. You can go back, fix mistakes, add details, or even change the whole story. But you can’t do any of that with a blank page.
It’s much easier to revise something than to create from nothing.
Even the greatest writers and artists start with messy drafts. That’s how they shape their ideas into masterpieces.
So, think again about that project you’ve been putting off. What if you just got started today? Imagine the momentum you could build if you just took the first step. You might surprise yourself with what you can do.
