FROM MY WORLD

How a Fight with My Brother Made Me a Better Marketer

Do you ever hesitate before hitting "send" on an email, thinking, Is this too much? Am I sharing too many personal details?

Let me confess something: if talking too much about yourself is a crime, then I’m guilty as charged.

But you know what? I don’t think it’s wrong to share. The real question is, how much is too much?

If you’ve been there, you’re not alone. But let me tell you something: the right kind of personal story can be the difference between your audience loving you—or forgetting you.

I get it. Nobody wants to overshare. Sure, but there are obvious no-go zones.

Got an embarrassing health issue? Maybe skip that. Just had a blowout fight with your spouse? Not exactly list material. But when you use your personal stories the right way, they don’t just build connection—they build trust.

I’ve seen both ends of the spectrum. Take this guru I knew. He’d run seminars and invite clients onto his boat (cool idea, right?). But then he and his wife would have massive arguments in front of everyone. The kind that makes people look for the nearest life raft. Not exactly a recipe for building rapport.

Contrast that with something I often share: my relationship with my brother. We grew up under the same roof, with the same parents, in the same neighborhood, and even took similar paths early on—both of us served in the Air Force, both got married young. But our lives turned out drastically different.

I’ve succeeded in building a business and lifestyle I love. My brother? He’s stuck grinding away in two jobs, frustrated and unfulfilled.

We’ve had more than a few fallouts over our different choices, including one big reconciliation during a family funeral. But guess what? Two months later, we were fighting again.

Life’s messy like that.

The difference between those two stories? One turns people off, while the other draws people in.

Why? Because my story about my brother isn’t just about family drama—it’s about something everyone can relate to: how our choices shape our lives.

And when I tell it, people get it.

So here’s my rule: Share the stories that matter, the ones that show your humanity and connect to your audience’s struggles. Skip the stuff that’s just noise.

Because the best marketing isn’t about oversharing—it’s about sharing what connects.

MINDSET MAKEOVER

Stop Trying to Be Everything

Have you ever noticed how some people can walk into a room and captivate everyone, while others fade into the background?

That’s not luck—it’s the power of persona

Whether you’re networking, selling, or just trying to make an impact, the way you present yourself to the world can be the game-changer.

Here’s the kicker: Your persona doesn’t even have to match who you are in everyday life. It’s a crafted version of yourself—designed with intention—made to connect with the people you want to influence.

Think of stand-up comedians. The best ones—Bill Burr, Jerry Seinfeld, George Carlin—they’re not just funny; they’ve built personas that magnify their voices.

Burr’s the guy who’s always annoyed.

Seinfeld? The neat freak obsessed with life’s little quirks.

Carlin? The philosopher with a dark edge.

Their personas are rooted in a philosophy that drives their content, making everything they say feel natural and relatable.

Here’s why this should matter to you: If you’re trying to grow in life or business, your persona can become your secret weapon.

Having a clear philosophy—a way you see the world and what you stand for—makes it easier to connect with others, articulate your ideas, and stay consistent. Your persona is your anchor.

For marketers (like me), this is gold.

When your persona is dialed in, you don’t just attract attention—you attract loyalty.

Your audience knows what you’re about and wants more of it. And the more you lean into your persona, the easier it becomes to create, speak, and, yes, sell.

But here’s the fascinating part: Changing personas can unlock entirely new opportunities.

My friend Ty Cohen tested this in his business. Ty’s known for his Kindle publishing expertise and typically attracts a specific demographic. But he hired a younger British guy to deliver his same webinar script. Boom—suddenly, an entirely new audience showed up, eager to buy.

The lesson? Your persona is your tool, not your limit.

So here’s the mindset shift: Stop seeing yourself as a static person and start seeing yourself as a persona in progress. Ask yourself:

  • What do I stand for?

  • Who do I want to connect with?

  • What values or philosophies do I want to be known for?

Dial it in, and you’ll find that success—whether it’s in your personal life, your career, or your marketing—becomes a whole lot easier.

FOR YOUR LISTENING PLEASURE

The Persuasion Secrets Of The Top 1% With Jeremy Miner

After studying under the best (and the worst) of marketers on the entire planet, I conclude: Tons of people know how to market well. Some know how to teach it. Few know how to teach it well.

The top earners and the super affiliates know how to get prospects to march down to the order forms credit card in hand. But they can’t teach others to duplicate their success even if their life depended on it.

Which is why I’m thrilled to be hosting Jeremy Miner – the one guy who’s made it his life mission to teach others how to sell like a pro… Someone who’s students are literally raking it in across dozens of different industries. Tune in to get the inside scoop.
