FROM MY WORLD

Moby Dick Marketing

You’ve likely read "Moby Dick" or at least watched the movie "In the Heart of the Sea," which was inspired by it. If neither rings a bell, you're probably from the younger crowd.

For the zoomers reading this, here’s a quick rundown:

The story takes place in 1819 when the whaling ship Essex sets sail from Nantucket. The crew, led by Captain George Pollard, is on a mission to find a secret bay packed with whales. They're after valuable whale oil, dreaming of striking it rich.

They hear tales about this magical bay and head deep into the Pacific Ocean, their heads filled with visions of wealth.

But things take a wild turn when they run into a giant, white sperm whale named Moby Dick. This whale isn't too happy to see them. It attacks the Essex, sinks the ship and leaves the crew stranded in the middle of the ocean.

What's that got to do with marketing, you ask?

Well, a lot of marketers are like the Essex crew… and so was I.

You see, I used to believe that good clients were hiding out somewhere, like a secret society of X-Men. I thought they'd only reveal themselves if I did my marketing just right.

But that's not how it works.

Just like those whalers, we often believe there's a hidden spot where all the best leads are hanging out. But the truth is, those high-quality leads are right under our noses, even among our most desperate and broke prospects.

Think about it: we often do nothing to prevent a problem, but we'll do everything to fix it.

This is due to a cognitive bias known as loss aversion. We are more motivated to avoid losses than to achieve equivalent gains.

This is why some of the most profitable markets are also the most painful and desperate

For example, in the "make money online" niche, your best prospects might actually be those who are struggling financially. Why? Because their desperation makes them serious about change.

It's not about their paycheck, profession, or current financial situation. It's about their motivation and willingness to invest in themselves to make a change. They might not have a lot of money now, but they'll find a way to make it happen if they're truly committed to transforming their lives.

Now, you might be thinking: Is it ethical to sell to people who are struggling?

My answer is yes.

Why? Because if you have the knowledge and resources to help them improve their lives, wouldn't it be selfish not to share that?

Instead of spending their money on things that won't make a lasting impact, they'll be investing in something that could change their financial future.

Remember, the economy thrives on the exchange of money, and salespeople are the ones who facilitate that exchange. By selling effectively, we're actually contributing to a healthier economy and helping people create a better life for themselves.

So, stop chasing the myth of the hidden bay. Embrace the power of selling, and remember that your best prospects are the ones who need you the most.

LESSONS FROM LEGENDS

Matt Bacak’s Smart Subscriber Growth Hack

Ever heard the term "steal like an artist"? In the email marketing world, Matt Bacak is the Picasso of subscriber growth.

His not-so-secret weapon? Ethically "stealing" subscribers. Don't worry, this isn't about shady deals. It's about building smart partnerships that help everyone.

Think of it like this: some businesses already have email lists full of people who would love what you're selling. Instead of working hard to find those folks yourself, why not team up with the businesses that have already done the hard work?

It's like getting VIP access to the hottest party in town. Do you want to pull off this "heist"? Here's your game plan:

  • Identify your dream partners: Who already has the attention of your ideal customers?

  • Offer them something irresistible: Think about what you can give them that will make them eager to share their list with you. A discount? A freebie? A joint venture?

  • Seal the deal: Work out an agreement that benefits both of you. It's a partnership, not a one-sided deal.

  • Watch your list explode: Sit back and watch your email list grow faster than you ever thought possible. It's like magic, but totally legal!

So, remember, sometimes the smartest way to grow is to team up with others. It's like a shortcut to success, and it's totally okay to do!

Screw It, Just Decide

Offer Decide GIF by ABC Network

What separates the movers and shakers from the crowd? It's not about being the smartest or working the hardest. It's about the guts to make decisions and own them, even when the path ahead isn't clear.

Picture this: two people, equally smart, equally driven. One jumps into action, makes choices, and rolls with the punches. The other stalls, paralyzed by the fear of a wrong step. Who do you think ends up ahead? The go-getter learns and advances, while the hesitant one remains stuck in limbo.

Being decisive doesn’t mean you always get it right. It means you're willing to take risks and learn from your mistakes. If you're scared to make decisions, start small. Make quick choices on little things and build your confidence. Embrace the outcomes, whether good or bad, as chances to grow. It's not about never screwing up; it's about learning and getting better.

Most importantly, this is a skill anyone can develop with practice and the right attitude.

So, next time you're faced with a choice: screw it, just decide! Your progress depends on it.
