FROM MY WORLD

What Black Panther Taught Me About Email Lists

You know what’s wild?

Marvel could release a movie about a purple raccoon dancing ballet, and people would still line up to watch it.

I’m not kidding.

Remember when Black Panther hit the theaters? It was a cultural phenomenon—Marvel’s highest-grossing movie at the time. And it wasn’t just a one-off success. It didn’t matter whether it was Black Panther, Iron Man, or a third-rate superhero nobody cared about.

Marvel fans showed up in droves. They were hooked.

Why?

It’s because Marvel built an audience so loyal that they could have released a movie about a pink bunny rabbit fighting crime, and people would still buy the popcorn.

Even if the movie was trash—and let’s be honest, some of their more recent stuff (looking at you, She-Hulk) has been rough—fans keep coming back.

That, my friend, is the power of having a list.

When you build a loyal audience, they’ll stick with you through thick and thin. You could send out the weirdest email subject lines (I’m guilty of this myself), and your people will still open them.

They’re invested in YOU, not just the content.

Marvel’s been pumping out movies for years, and because they nurtured their audience from the beginning, they’ve got a loyal following that keeps coming back—good movies or bad, it doesn’t matter. That’s exactly what happens when you build a solid email list.

And guess what? You don’t have to be a multi-billion-dollar franchise to pull this off. All you need is consistency, value, and the guts to tie your emails into what’s happening around you.

When Black Panther was smashing box-office records, I didn’t just sit back and enjoy the popcorn.

Nope. I used that hype to craft an email about the power of having a list, because Marvel’s success was the perfect analogy.

Think about it: no list, no box-office success. No audience, no profits.

Marvel’s fans show up because they know what they’re getting. That’s exactly how it works with your list. If you show up, deliver value, and stay consistent, your subscribers will follow you anywhere.

Even when you have an off day (or an off email).

So the next time you sit down to write your email, take a look around.

What’s happening in pop culture, politics, or even the economy that you can tie back to your message? Stay relevant, keep your readers hooked, and your list will become your secret weapon—just like Marvel’s.

MINDSET MAKEOVER

Success Depression Is a Real Thing—And It’s Destroying Entrepreneurs

Here’s a truth you won’t see on your Instagram feed: success isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Entrepreneurship gets glamorized like it’s the new rock star lifestyle—money, freedom, fame. But what happens when you finally make it?

What no one tells you is that success often comes with its own set of problems.

It's like the rock stars of the '80s.

They had it all—money, fame, the cover of Rolling Stone—yet so many of them spiraled into chaos. Drugs, depression, and self-destruction were often the unspoken reality behind the scenes.

Fast forward to today, and the digital entrepreneur—the online hustler—is facing a quieter but no less dangerous version of this.

You make your first million, and suddenly, you're supposed to feel invincible, right?

But instead, you're sitting in front of your laptop wondering why life still feels incomplete. That missing piece of the puzzle doesn’t magically appear just because you hit your financial goals.

Success doesn't fill the void.

Many entrepreneurs hit this wall. They grind for years, thinking once they "make it," life will be perfect. Then they wake up one day and realize they’re burned out, lonely, or worse—completely detached from what truly makes them happy.

It’s called "success depression," and it’s more common than you think.

But here’s the kicker: the solution isn’t in making more money. It’s in acceptance

Accepting that no amount of success will ever fix what’s broken inside until you take care of your mental health.

Entrepreneurs push hard—they’re always in fight-or-flight mode. But to stay in the game, you have to surrender to the process and let go of the idea that success equals happiness.

The real challenge is finding peace in the journey, not just in the destination.

Success is a mental game. And just like in business, if your mindset isn’t right, no amount of money will save you.
