FROM MY WORLD

What Ronald Reagan and Frank Kern Can Teach You About Influence

You know, when it comes to email marketing, one of the biggest mistakes I see is people trying to please everyone on their list.

I’m talking about those folks who are terrified of hitting "send" because they think their opinion might offend someone, or worse—lead to an unsubscribe.

But here’s the reality, and I say this with love: if you try to be everything to everyone, you’ll end up being nothing to anyone.

Recently, I was shooting the breeze with one of my best friends, and it turned into an argument. We do this all the time, and it’s almost always about the most ridiculous thing: cars.

I love driving European cars—high-performance machines that just feel better on the road. But my buddy? He’s obsessed with American Fords. Not the Mustangs or the classic muscle cars, mind you, but these supercharged SUVs.

And honestly, I don’t get it. Ford? Really?! But guess what? We’re still friends.

We’re still tight, even though we’ve never agreed on this one thing.

So, what does that mean for you and your email list?

Simple. Your subscribers don’t need to agree with everything you say. They just need to know you’re coming from a real, authentic place. When you have the courage to express a strong opinion in your emails—even one that might turn some people off—it does wonders for your credibility.

You’re not here to be a people-pleaser. You're here to lead a tribe of people who like your style, respect your opinions, and resonate with your message—even when you rub them the wrong way.

If someone hits unsubscribe or spam because you said something they didn’t like, you know what? They were never going to buy from you anyway. You can’t lose what you never had.

The truth is, people are drawn to boldness. They’re drawn to someone who says what they think and isn’t afraid to make a few waves.

Take a lesson from Ronald Reagan—who could throw a charming jab with humor—or from Frank Kern, who has the art of being self-deprecating and cool down to a science. People love real. That’s what keeps them on your list.

So don’t be afraid to make a stand. Share what excites you, what annoys you, and don’t hold back on the sarcasm either! Your readers are more likely to stick around and—surprise, surprise—buy from you when they feel like they know you.

MINDSET MAKEOVER

Treat Yourself Like a Million-Dollar Racehorse

Have you ever caught yourself in the middle of something important—like writing emails or planning your next big move—and suddenly felt the urge to get up, make a snack, or God forbid, check Instagram?

Yeah, me too. It’s like your brain hits the eject button, and suddenly, that half-finished espresso becomes an excuse to brew another one. But here’s the truth: every time you give in to that urge, you’re leaking money.

Let me explain.

If you want to build a wildly profitable email list or business, you’ve got to start treating yourself like a million-dollar racehorse.

Seriously. Think about it. If you owned a horse worth a cool million, would you let it eat junk food? Would you let it sit around all day, skipping training? Of course not. You’d be hyper-focused on making sure it’s in peak condition—because that’s how it performs at its best. You are that racehorse.

Now, don’t worry, I’m not telling you to wake up at 5 a.m. and start eating raw eggs like Rocky (unless that’s your thing).

What I am saying is this: if you want to operate at a high level, you’ve got to be intentional with how you treat your body and mind. You have to protect your focus like it's gold. Because it is.

Take it from me. When I find myself losing focus, I know it’s time to check in with my routine. Am I getting enough sleep? Am I eating the right foods that fuel my energy instead of draining it? Am I guarding my attention from distractions? It’s all connected.

One bad move, like eating high-carb, sugary junk for breakfast, and boom—your focus crashes faster than Bitcoin in a bear market. I even refuse to feed my kids sugary stuff in the morning for this exact reason!

Why? Because I don’t want them hitting a sugar crash by second period. They may not appreciate it now, but their focus will thank me later.

Here’s the deal: focus is finite. It’s a limited resource. If you let it slip, you can’t just get it back by switching gears.

That’s why I won’t even pick up the phone when my dad calls me in the morning. (Sorry, Dad!) We’ll end up talking about football, Man United’s latest disaster, and how to fix their management for 30 minutes—minutes I can’t afford to waste on a game instead of my goals.

So, how do you protect your focus and treat yourself like that million-dollar athlete? Simple:

  • Watch what you eat. Skip the high-carb, high-sugar breakfasts that crash your energy. Stick to something with fats and proteins that’ll keep you fueled for hours. My go-to? Eggs, salmon, avocado, and MCT oil.

  • Guard your mornings. Your brain is sharpest in the morning, so use that time for your most important tasks. Turn off notifications, ignore calls, and dive into work. If you can knock out your biggest goal before lunch, you’re winning the day.

  • Stop chasing shiny objects. Every time you get distracted, you’re draining your energy reserves. So ask yourself: Is this task moving me closer to my goals, or is it pulling me away?

Your attention is the most valuable currency you have. Treat it like that, and watch how fast you start getting things done.
